There is a philosophy in today’s society called “earning the right.” It pertains to earning assistance, because it is not about you but the the people from whom you seek help.
In Transition This Means
Have we earned the right to have a hiring manager call us back about our resume? Have we earned the right to have our LinkedIn connection request accepted,? Have we earned the right to ask a person to refer us to a company that is hiring?
In Grief It Means
Have we earned the right to ask for a hug, a phone call or a shoulder to cry on or help with household chores?
My Opinion
Well, “earning the right” always bugged me or to channel Mr. Spock, it does not seem logical. In my opinion it goes against Matthew 7:12
“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” (NIV)
Acceptance
God does not ask if you have earned the right to spend eternity in heaven, because there is no way to earn your place in heaven. No amount of good deeds, no amount of boasting about how much you do or give away will get you into heaven. All you have to do is to accept that Jesus died on the cross for your sins.
Acceptance is all that is necessary to spend eternity in heaven.
So are you going to accept the fact someone is unemployed and help them?
Are you going to accept the fact there are grieving people out there who need your comfort?
Generosity
Since God was so generous to us, why would we not be generous to our fellow man? Why would we not do unto others as we would have them do unto us? Why would we judge others in order to determine if they “earned” the right to for us to help them?
A Blink, A Wink Or A Nod
Your life can change in the time it takes to blink, wink or nod your head. Just that quickly you may find the company you own in ruins, you may end up a widow/widower, or the company you work for downsizing and then you will be the one in need figuring out how to earn others assistance.
Philosophy
What is your philosophy?
Do you make people earn the right or do you accept them as they are and help them because you would want their help if the roles were reversed?
The best way to help others is to adopt a do unto others philosophy.
After all, you may need to help in a blink, wink or a nod and you will want someone to think:
“He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother”
