40 Days of Joy

Create New Traditions

Gifts of time and love are surely the basic ingredients of a truly merry Christmas.

It is perfectly acceptable to create new traditions.  This applies even if you are not grieving.

I found lots of ideas from:

  • “Homemade Christmas!”
  • “Quick & Easy Christmas”

Both from Gooseberry Patch (link to lots of good books – I just got hooked on this series)

Here are just a few.  Check out the books for more good ideas, or let your imagination come up with new traditions of your own.

Have an appetizer swap with three or four girlfriends!

Each makes a big batch of her favorite dip, spread or finger food,

Then get together to sample and divide ‘em up.  You’ll all have a super variety of goodies for holiday parties.

(P.S.  If you know someone who is grieving, fix a variety platter and drop it off to her. )

Not enough ribbon to tie a bow?  Wrap a box in solid paper, then hot-glue wrapped peppermint candies to the box top…so cute!

(P.S. This is definitely becoming a new tradition in my house this year!)

Clever party favors!  Remove the caps from clear glass ornaments, then write holiday greetings on pieces of paper no wider than the ornament.  Roll up each greeting, tie with ribbon, slip inside the ornament and replace the cap.

A mug tree from the kitchen makes a clever holder for displaying several favorite Christmas ornaments.

Start a sweet new tradition at your holiday dinner…hand out paper star cut-outs and have each person write down what they’re happiest for since last Christmas.

When you go out on Christmas Eve to attend church services or see the Christmas lights, drop off a plate of homemade cookies at your local fire or police station…it’s sure to be much appreciated.

Something New

Start a new tradition this year, no matter what is going on in your life.  I bet you will find doing something new adds more joy to the holiday season.

I wish we could put up some of the Christmas spirit in jars and open a jar of it every month.
