Sunday Hymnal – My Chains Are Gone

On the drive home from the vet’s office Friday afternoon, I thought of the following line:

My chains are gone, I’ve been set free.

I knew I had to use this song for Sunday Hymnal.

I was at a stop light when I thought of it and after driving through the light I caught a glimpse of a yellow-bodied butterfly with black edging fly across my windshield. I also saw the same butterfly on Saturday afternoon while at the cemetery where Joe is buried.

Rommie’s chain was her hip dysplasia and that chain is now gone – forever.

Run free my beloved golden daughter, run free.

Amazing grace
How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I’m found
Was blind, but now I see

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed

My chains are gone
I’ve been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood His mercy reigns
Unending love, amazing grace

The Lord has promised good to me
His word my hope secures
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures

[2x]
My chains are gone
I’ve been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood His mercy reigns
Unending love, amazing grace

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow
The sun forbear to shine
But God, Who called me here below,
Will be forever mine.
Will be forever mine.
You are forever mine.

A Family Favorite

Every Sunday for the next few weeks, Weekend Wisdom will be hymns that have a special place in mine or other family members heart.

A Family Favorite

This was my paternal grandmother’s and great-grandmother’s favorite hymn.  It’s an okay hymn in my book as long as you leave out the bagpipes.  Although Il Divo did a version of this a couple years ago that is awesome.

My Favorite Story About This Hymn

When Joe and I lived in our apartment, we use to have dinner at a locally-owned sports bar around the corner.  I was addicted to their chicken nachos.

They started having karaoke and in order to get the crowd warmed up, the DJ played this song.  It was a packed house and the customers were in various states of intoxication, but everyone sang along.  That night, this hymn was sung with such power, passion and gusto as I have never heard before or since.  We made the Morman Tabernacle Choir sound like amateurs.

Amazing Grace

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me….
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.

T’was Grace that taught…
my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear…
the hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares…
we have already come.
T’was Grace that brought us safe thus far…
and Grace will lead us home.

The Lord has promised good to me…
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be…
as long as life endures.

When we’ve been here ten thousand years…
bright shining as the sun.
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise…
then when we’ve first begun.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me….
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.
