“Dark Side” – We All Have & Need It

Inspiration

Below are some of the lyrics to Kelly Clarkson’s song that was the inspiration for this post.

“Dark Side”

Kelly Clarkson

 There’s a place that I know

It’s not pretty there and few have ever gone
If I show it to you now
Will it make you run away

Or will you stay
Even if it hurts
Even if I try to push you out
Will you return?
And remind me who I really am
Please remind me who I really am

If we were all perky and happy 24/7, we would be residing in heaven.  People are perfect there. However, we are here on earth every one of us is imperfect.

This means we all have a dark side.  It is impossible for us to be happy, smiling and upbeat 24/7, 365 days a year.   Our dark side could emerge for various reasons such as grief, job loss, or just getting up on the wrong side of the bed.

In fact we need our dark side.

God uses dark times and our dark side to grow us into the person He wants us to be.   How can you grow when you have no cares, worries or troubles that cause your dark side to emerge?

Growing Pains

Now I am not suggesting everyone be a “Negative Nellie”, but when a bad day or event happens go to your negative place, embrace it, and learn from it.

Remember, God will be with you when you are in a negative state no matter what the reason.

4 Questions

When you find yourself wrestling with your dark side ask yourself:

  • “How is God growing me?”
  • “What am I learning from this?”
  • “How can I share what I learned with others?”
  • “How can I get back to feeling joyful and positive?”

Use dark, dreary and depressing times as learning experiences.  By doing so, you are a positive role model for your friends and family.

Then when joy returns, fully appreciate it.

2 Questions For Happy People

All the happy people out there need to realize there is nothing wrong with occasionally being in a bad frame of mind.  The question is:

  • Will you have enough love to help your friends, family and acquaintances whose dark side is showing?
  • Do you not want to be around them because they will drag you down?

Not wanting to be around them because they will drag you down is being very selfish.   You are only looking out for you and not caring for your fellow human being.  It also shows that you do not love yourself.  If you did, you would not let someone’s dark side prevent you from helping them. Remember:

Love your neighbor as yourself.

Matthew 22:39

“Stay – just a little bit longer”

Don’t run away when someone reveals their dark side.  Stay by their side and provide them with necessary support and guidance. Their pain will pass and they will emerge a stronger more beautiful person.

They are worth helping.

So will you love them?

Everybody’s got a dark side
Do you love me?
Can you love mine?
Nobody’s a picture perfect
But we’re worth it
You know that we’re worth it
Will you love me?
Even with my dark side?
